A proxy to sign the treaty with the Flemings, 10 Jun 1338. Appointed Justiciar of Ireland for life, 3 Mar 1339/40; as the King could not dispense with his continual attendance, a deputy was appointed, 16 Mar 1340/1: he resigned the office, 10 Feb 1343/4. Chamberlain to the King from 1341 to Sep 1346 or later. He accompanied the Earl of Northampton in his expedition to Brittany in Aug 1342. Appointed Constable of Nottingham Castle, 2 Mar 1343/4, and of the Tower of London, 12 Mar 1345/6, both for life. He was at the Battle of Crecy, and was one of those sent from before Calais, 8 Sep 1346, to announce the victory in Parl. He married firstly, Emmeline, daughter and heir of Walter Heron of Silkstone, co. York (son and heir apparent of Sir William Heron of Hadstone, Northumberland, and Notton, co. York), by Alice, daughter of Sir Nicholas De Hastinges, of Allerston, co. York, and Gissing, Norfolk. She was aged 7 1/2 years May 1297. He married secondly, 3 Jul 1329, at Maynooth, co. Kildare, Joan, widow of Thomas (FitzJohn), Earl of Kildare (who died 5 Apr 1328, at Maynooth, being then Justiciar), and 4th daughter of Richard De Burgh, Earl of Ulster, by Margaret, his wife. He died 30 May 1347, on which day he had received a pardon for all homicides, felonies, robberies, &c., for all oppressions by colour of any office he had held, for all trespasses of vert and venison, and of any consequent outlawries, and for all arrears and debts. His widow died 23 Apr 1359, and was buried, with her 1st husband, in the Church of the Friars Minors at Kildare

Notes: Lord Darcy, called Le Fitz, and afterwards de Knayth, son and heir. He had a grant, 1 Aug 1341, of 40 pounds a year to him and his heirs, for his long and gratuitous services. Appointed Keeper of the manor of Burstwick, co. York, with its members in cos. York and Lincoln, and Escheator in Holderness, for life, 1 Oct 1344. These offices were regranted to him, 16 Mar 1345/6, but the King could not dispense with his constant attendence, and appointed a deputy, 20 Mar 1345/6. One of the King's Council. He was granted an annuity of 200 pounds for life, to maintain himself a Banneret, 15 Jul 1346, at La Hogue. Was at the Battle of Crecy, and at the siege of Calais, being in the King's retinue. He was aged 30 and more at his father's death, and did homage and had livery of his inheritance, 5 Jun 1347. Appointed Constable of the Tower of London for life, 7 Jun 1347, but was permitted to grant the office away, 15 Mar 1351/2. Appointed a commissioner to treat with the Cardinals concerning peace with France 25 Sep 1347. He was sum. to a Great Council 15 Jul (1353) 27 Edward III, and to Parliament from 20 Nov (1348) 22 Edward III to 15 Mar (1353/4) 28 Edward III, by writs directed Johanni Darcy de Knayth'. He married, firstly, BEF 8 Jul 1332, Alianore de Holand. She died s.p.m., before 21 Nov 1341. He married secondly (disp. from the Bishop of Lincoln, 7 Jan 1344/5), Elizabeth Menille. The King took his fealty, and they had livery of her lands, 10 Oct 1348. On 22 Apr 1353 he received a pardon for all homocides, felonies, robberies, &c., for all oppressions by colour of any office he had held, for all trespasses of very and venison, and of any consequent outlawries, and for all arrears and debts. He died 5 Mar 1355/6, at Natton, co. York, and was buried in Guisborough Priory. His widow, the King having taken her homage and fealty, had livery of Whorlton, &c., 1 May, and her dower was ordered to be assigned, 4 Jul 1356. She married before 18 Nov 1356 (pardon for marrying without lic., 30 Oct 1357), as 1st wife, Sir Piers De Mauley, le sisme, of Mulgrave, co. York (Lord Mauley). Her dower was again ordered to be assigned, 30 Oct 1357 and 20 Jun 1358. She, who was born 15 Oct 1331, at Whorlton, and bap. there, died 9 Jul 1368, aged 36. He died 19 or 20 Mar 1382/3. Notes: she married Robert Leeche or Leech of Norwich (d. AFT 1544) but during that marriage was the mistress of Richard Southwell of Woodrising, who had married her aunt, Thomasine Darcy, in 1540. They had four children together before Thomasine died and Southwell was able to marry her. According to one account, Mary’s husband had also died. According to another, he was still alive when Thomasine died but Southwell accused him of making a bigamous marriage with Mary, since his (Leeche’s) first wife still lived. Southwell was a courtier, high in King Henry VIII’s favor, so no one made any trouble about this, nor was Mary ever prosecuted for adultery. It isn’t clear when they did marry. In 1544, Southwell was granted Widford Manor in Hertfordshire. Later the same year Thomas Lewyn, clerk, acting for Southwell, had license to alienate the manor to the use of Mary Leech, wife of Robert Leech, alderman of Norwich. In 1558, she is listed as Mary Darcy alias Leech of Horsham St. Faith, Norfolk. After their marriage, they had one additional child, Catherine.

Notes: created Countess Rivers for life in her own right on 21 Apr 1641. She was a lady of the bedchamber to Queen Henrietta Maria and because she was a Catholic, became a target when Parliament called for action against all recusants. Her homes at St. Osyth and Long Melford were destroyed by mobs, for a loss estimated at £100,000. Although Parliament ordered restitution, her troubles continued and in May 1643 she requested permission to leave England for France, but does not appear to have gone. By her death, she was said to be bankrupt.
