Nest (called the "Helen of Troy of Wales") had a son by Henry I. Gerald was officer to Arnulf De Montgomery and a great favorite of Henry I, from whom he received Moulsford in Berkshire.

Notes: at the death of her brother in 1175, her son Gerald was unanimously elected Bishop of St. David's by the Welsh and English canons of the diocese. By the time he was 13 years old his father and uncle, then the Bishop of St. David's, had taken to calling him "the little Bishop". Soon he was sent away to a monastery to begin his religious education early. But King Henry II immediately sensed the political implications and would not accept this able and ambitious young man (Gerald was 29 years old) as a potential Archbishop. Five years before Beckett had proved troublesome to Henry and he was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral.

Notes: as a widow, Lady Eleanor MacCarthy, sheltered her nephew, Gerald Fitzgerald, future E. of Kildare, who had escaped from Kilbrittain Castle with the aid of a priest. Five of her brothers and another nephew were executed in England on 3 Feb 1537. In order to protect young Gerald, who was only twelve years old, Eleanor married Manus O’Donnell, around Jun 1538, making that protection an article of their marriage settlement. For a time, O’Donnell led the Geraldine league in defense of Fitzgerald rights in Ireland, but by 1540 he was in secret negotiations with England and Eleanor, fearing betrayal, spirited Gerald away to France. One of the livelier accounts has her telling O’Donnell she’d never have married him if not for her need to protect Gerald and calling him a “clownish curmudgeon”. Manus submitted to the English in 1541. Although another account has O’Donnell, while imprisoned in Lifford Castle from 1548-1554, writing love poetry to his estranged wife, it seems likely that Eleanor had died by then. According to the Oxford DNB, O’Donnell married four times and another of his wives, Margaret MacDonald, died in 1544. Since Manus married Eleanor before that date, it seems logical to assume that she died at some point between 1540 and 1544. However, other sources indicate an annulment by mutual consent, which would allow remarriage and leave Eleanor's date of death in doubt. O’Donnell had numerous children, but probably none by Eleanor.

In the seventeenth century, Margaret and her husband were credited with having brought civilization to Tipperary and Kilkenny. Margaret in particular was a patron of both schools and craftsmen.

Alice FITZGERALD

Notes: in Dec 1526, Alice accompanied her father to the English court and they later stayed at the Duke of Norfolk’s house at Newington. Inquires were being made into his conduct as lord deputy. While in England, Alice married her cousin, James Fleming, 9th Baron Slane. She returned to Ireland without her father in Aug 1528. Later charges of treason against the Earl indicated that on 8 Jul 1528, he sent her home with orders to stir up trouble for the new lord deputy. Apparently she did so, for she had to be pardoned for “treasons and conspiracies with Irish rebels” in Jun 1529. Her husband was known as “Black James” and was one of the heroes of the battle of Bellahoe (1539). Alice was not the Lady Slane still found in records for Jul 1561. That was probably Slane’s second wife, Ellis (or Elizabeth) Plunkett, married at some point after 1540 and still alive in 1580 when Queen Elizabeth imprisoned her in the Tower of London for “disobedience”.

Mary FITZGERALD

Died: ABT 1596

Notes: her husband was a rebel, espousing the Geraldine cause. Her father died a prisoner in England and her brother Thomas and five of her uncles were executed in England on 3 Feb 1537. In 1539, Mary gave shelter to her young half brother, Gerald, later E. of Kildare, before sending him to their aunt, Eleanor Fitzgerald, for safety. Mary's husband was imprisoned in the Marshalsea in London from 1548-1554. Their daughter Margaret went to England and helped negotiate his release. He returned to England, with Gerald Fitzgerald, and at that time he was restored as Earl of Kildare, called The Wizard Earl. Little is known of Mary’s widowhood, but in 1582 her son Cathal killed a man and was forced to flee Ireland. He went first to Scotland and then to Spain, where he took the name Don Carlos. At some point, Mary joined him there. In Nov 1596, Cathal attempted to return to Ireland with his mother, wife, and family. He drowned when shipwrecked en route. One presumes that the other members of his family also perished, although the records do not bother to say.

Thomas 'Silken Thomas' FITZGERALD (10° E. Kildare)

Notes: known as "Silken Thomas" because of the silk fringes on the helmets of his horsemen. Attainted 1536. Rebels against England as a protest against Henry VIII's treatment of his father. Was declared a "rebel" after receiving a report that his father, who had been summoned to England, had been executed and plans had been made to assassinate himself and his uncles. His father Gerald (or Garett) Mor, 9th Earl of Kildare, was, in fact, stlill alive but died of grief when told that Thomas had been excommunicated for ordering the execution of Archbishop Allen. During his revolt, Dublin Castle is besieged and Fitzgerald (now 10th earl of Kildare) offers his allegiance to the Pope instead of to the 'schismatic' Henry. Despite Thomas Cromwell's attempts to undermine his influence, it takes about a year to control the revolt. On 23 Mar 1535, Kildare's army is crushed at Maynooth Castle, County Kildare. In Aug, he surrenders and is executed for treason on 3 Feb 1537 along with five of his uncles.

Notes: The Wizard Earl. Was only ten years old when his brother Thomas was arrested and because his uncles had all been executed by the English government, he was the only survivng heir to the Earldom of Kildare. Fearing for his life, Thomas Leverous, a priest, and Gerald's relatives James Delahide and Lady Mary O'Conor kept him concealed. With the assistance of Shane O'Neil, Earl of Tyrone and James Fitzgerald, Earl of Desmond, he was eventually sent to France until such time as he could return. Those who assisted became known as the "Geraldine League". One of the reasons for the King's intense jealousy and anxiety regarding the Geraldines, both the Kildares and Desmonds,  becomes apparent in a letter written to Cromwell in 1538: "I ensure your Lordship that his English Pale, except the towens, and a very few of the possessioners, bee too affectionat to the Geraldynes, that for kynrede, maryage, fostering, and adhering as followers, they coveite moore to see a Geraldyn to reigne and triumphe, than to see God come emonges theym..."
