Notes: in the 26th year of Henry III, had a military summons to attend the King into France, and in ten years afterwards had the whole county of Chester, and all North Wales placed under his government. In the 45th year of the same reign he obtained a charter for a weekly market at Ashby-La -Zouche, in Leicestershire, and for two fairs in the year at Swavesey. ABT the same time he was constituted warden of all the King's forests south of Trent, as also Sheriff of Northamptonshire. In the 46th year of Henry III, he was made Justice Itinerant for the cos. of Southampton, Buckingham, and Northampton; and upon the arbitration made by Louis, King of France, between Henry III and the barons, he was one of the sureties on the behalf of the King. In three years afterwards he was constituted Constable of the Tower of London, and Governor of the castle at Northampton. He was violently assaulted in Westminster Hall, in 1268, by John, Earl of Warren and Surrey, upon occasion of a dispute between them regarding some landed property, and with his son, Roger, who happened to be with him, severely wounded.

Notes: In 1527, she wrote her cousin, Lord Arundel, begging to be taken into Royal Service as her new step-mother was cruel, Susan Welby, to her. She was at court as a maid of honor, possibly first to Catalina of Aragon, but certainly to Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour. She is pressumably identical to the "Mrs. Souche" who received a gift of jewelled borders from Queen Jane Seymour and attended her funeral in 1537. In 1542 she was granted anannuity of ten pounds "in consideration of her service to the King and the late Queen Jane". Although the “M” in “M. Souch” could be an abbreviation for “Mistress” rather than “Mary”, or indicate that the likeness is of Margaret Cheney, second wife of Richard, 9th Lord Zouche, it is far more likely that Mary Zouche is the subject of this Holbein sketch.

Notes: Not sure about her parentage. Elizabeth became a nun and in 1529 was elected Abbess of Shaftesbury in Dorset. During 1536-38 she worked hard to preserve her house and its fifty-six nuns from the Dissolution, offering bribes to the King and to Thomas Cromwell, but on 23 Mar 1539 she signed a deed of surrender of the abbey, the last abbey to surrender. Received one of the largest pensions, £ 133 6s. 8d. a year and all her nuns were pensioned. The prioress received £20, the subprioress £7, and the sisters varying amounts between 56s. 8d. and £6 13s. 4d.

Notes: Anne Gainsford was a member of Anne Boleyn’s household as early as 1528. She was in possession of her mistress’s copy of William Tyndale’s The Obedience of the Christian Man, a book deemed heretical by Cardinal Wolsey, when Anne Boleyn’s equerry, George Zouche, who was courting Anne Gainsford, filched it. Having begun to read, he refused to return it, and he was caught by the Dean of the Chapel Royal, who reported the matter to Wolsey. Anne Gainsford herself recounted this incident to George Wyatt, who wrote the first biography of Anne Boleyn c.1590 and the same story was told by John Lowthe, Archdeacon of Nottingham, to John Foxe. Lowthe had spent the early part of his career in the Zouche household. Around the time Anne Boleyn became Queen, Anne Gainsford married George Zouche, who became a gentleman pensioner to the King. Later, Anne Zouche was obliged to testify against Queen Anne. There was another incident at Court in which Anne Gainsford played a part-albeit minor. In 1530, a book of ancient prophecies appeared in Anne Boleyn's apartments, which when opened showed three crude drawings representing the King, Catalina of Aragon, and Anne Boleyn. The figure of Anne lacked a head. When Anne Gainsford was shown the book with its drawings by her mistress, she allegedly remarked, "If I thought it true, though he were an emperor, I would not myself marry him". Whereas Anne Boleyn, according to Anne, dismissed the book as a bauble. John Foxe further identifies Anne Gainsford as the daughter of John Gainsford of Crowhurst, Surrey. Gainsford (b. 1469 - d. 28 Oct 1540) had six wives. Anne was the daughter of the second, Anne Hawte (b. ABT 1473). She had one sister, Mary (b. ABT 1495 - d. 12 Feb 1572), and Anne was likely born within a year or two either way. Genealogies say George Zouche married Anne Gainsford ABT 1510 and go on to list eight children and a second marriage, ABT 1526, to Helen Lane, that produced eleven more. Obviously, this does not fit with the known facts about Anne Gainsford, the waiting gentlewoman. It is possible that Helen was the first wife and Anne the second, but that does not quite fit, either. Mary S. Lovell in her biography of Bess of Hardwick, who was raised in Lady Zouche's household at Codnor Castle, says that Anne Gainsford was a lady in waiting to Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour before her marriage.

Notes: elected knight of the shire to the first Parliament called after he succeeded his father. He left no mark on the surviving records of the House of Commons, and within a year or two he had been outlawed on two counts of debt and was involved in litigation over a third. He was forced to assign his profitable iron works, Laskoe Mill Forge, to Sir Francis Willoughby, subject to £200 a year for his and his wife’s maintenance. In 1597, two of his debts, totalling £380, were still outstanding. Probably as a last resort, he entered into an agreement with a Captain Weymouth on the latter’s return from a voyage to Virginia in 1605, to found a settlement there, but nothing came of this in his own lifetime. Zouche managed to retain Codnor and estates at Alfreton, Buttefly, Heanor and Ripley until his death in Apr 1610. He was buried in the chancel of Heanor church on 3 Apr. His heir sold up and emigrated to Virginia.

Notes: member of the Virginia Company (1621-23). In 1631 the king appointed Sir John to devise a plan of government for Virginia. He and his son sold Codnor Castle, it manor, and the rest of their estates in 1634, and went to Virginia. In Virginia they unsuccessfully attempted to set up some iron works, probably on Falling Creek in Henrico County. A patent at the place to Thomas Ellis 7 May 1638 mentions land “lately belonging to Sir John Zouch, Kt.”. Sir John died in England (will dated 30 Aug 1636 - 4 Dec 1639) leaving his land to his son and other property to daughters. His son served as sole administrator of his will. He held land in Virginia by 20 Oct 1642 when a patent to Abraham Wood mentioned land, “west upon land of John Zouch”. John served in the House of Burgesses from Henrico County (1644). John Zouch was in the Virginia General Assembl.
