However, by marriage to Agnes, daughter of Sir Richard Cansfield, he secured the rich manor of Aldingham on Morcambe Bay in Lancashire and moved south to that location.

Notes: succeeded his mother in 1293, and his father in 1297, being still under age. K.B., MP 1326-47; held the manors of Aldingham, Thurnham, and Ulverston in co. Lancaster; Witherslack and Hutton Roof in Westmoreland, and Austwick and Harington in Cumberland. He was summoned for Military Service 26 Oct 1309 to 27 Mar 1335, to Councils from 30 Dec 1324 (prorogued on 20 Feb, cancelled 8 Apr) to 25 Feb 1341/2, and to Parliament from 3 Dec 1326 to 30 Jul 1347, by writs directed Johanni de Haveryngton' or Haryngton', whereby he is held to have become LORD HARINGTON. Sir John de Ha(ve)rington, 1st Lord (Baron), so created by writ of summons to Parliament 3 Dec 1326; knighted 1306. As an adherent of the Earl of Lancaster he was member of the faction opposed to Piers Gaveston, Edward II's favorite, who was killed by a group of barons. [Burke's Peerage]. Received pardon in 1313 for complicity in the murder, and a further pardon as the Earl's adherent Nov 1318, and in that year obtained a grant of free warren in his demesnes of Austwick, Harrington and Thurnham. He was a commissioner of array in 1316, 1318, 1322 and 1324; was forbidden to attend the Earl of Lancaster's meeting of "good peers" at Doncaster, Nov 1321, and does not seem to have taken part in the Earl's rising in the following spring; had a protection, Jun 1322, while assisting Andrew de Harcla in the Scottish Marches, but was outlawed in 1323 on the discovery of Harcla's treason, being pardoned on surrender; and later in that year was a custodian of the truce with the Scots. He was appointed on various commissions in the North to decide causes, array the local forces, &c. On the death s.p. of his brother Michael, he succeeded him in possession of Beetham, and Witherslack, Westmorland, and other estates. In 1336, in conjunction with Joan his wife, he made a settlement of his Lancashire manors: and, 6 Jan 1340/1, he obtained a charter of free warren in Witherslack, and a park in Aldingham.

Notes: 2d son, succeeded his brother John, then ae. 26, and is by some believed to have built, or rebuilt Gleaston Castle, a mile and a half from Aldingham Church. Like his brother, he fought in the French wars, and there has naturally arisen some confusion between him and his kinsman Sir William Harington of Hornby, Lancs. He crossed to France in the Duke of Gloucester's train before Agincourt, and probably took part in the battle. In the next campaign, in 1417, he attended his brother John, being distinguished as Sir William Harington of Somerset; and, as Lord Harington, fought in the Sieges-of Rouen 1418-19, Melun 1420, and Meaux 1421. He was summoned to Parliament from 26 Feb 1420/1 to 26 Sep 1439, by writs directed Willelmo de Haryngton'. In 1428, as William Harington, Knight, of the diocese of Exeter, he had Papal licence for himself and his wife Margaret to choose a confessor. Later he seems to have resided in Furness; and in 1431 he made an agreement, being styled "William lord of Harington," with the Abbot of Furness concerning the bounds between Leese and Dalton; and two years later, as " William Harington, lord of Aldingham," obtained leave for a passage way from his castle of Gleaston to Barray across the abbey's land. A feoffment of his Cumberland estate was made in Sep 1448, and another of his Lancashire manors and the castle of Gleaston in 1450, Sir William Bonville being one of the feoffees. He married, in or BEF 1423, Margaret, daughter of Sir John Hill, of Hill's Court, near Exeter, a judge of the King's Bench from 1389 to 1407. She predeceased him, and was buried at Conishead, as appears by her husband's will. He died s.p.m., 3 (or 10) Mar 1457/8. (Complete Peerage VI:318-9).

Notes: in Jul 1559, she was one of six attendant gentlewomen who accompanied her cousin, Jane Dormer, Countess of Feria, when she left England for the Low Countries. Margaret followed Jane to Spain and remained in her household there until her marriage in 1588 to Don Benito de Cisneros. Jane, by then Duchess of Feria, gave Margaret a dowry of 20,000 ducats. In the summer of 1593, Jane wrote in a letter that Margaret was “out of her wits all these days with grief” because her daughter had been seriously injured in a fall. At the time of the letter, the child was expected to recover, but both of Margaret’s children, as well as her husband, predeceased her. Shortly before her death, Margaret founded a monastery in Zafra for Franciscan nuns. Her tomb is in the Convento de Santa Maria.

As partial recompence Harrington was granted a licence to mint the first copper farthings by the King. Princess Elizabeth married the Elector Palatine, Frederick V to become the "Winter Queen". Lord Harrington accompanied her to Bohemia, but died on his way back in 1613. His son and heir, John, Lord Harrington, died with out issue at Keu in Surrey, 27 Aug 1613, three days later. After his death, the Exton estate was sold to pay his creditors, being purchased by Sir Baptist Hicks.

Notes: lived in Stepney in the eastern section of London. He was known as "The Poet" since he was one of the minor poets of the Elizabethan Age. He also collected and published the writings of other writers of that period. John made a very profitable marriage to Ethelreda Malte, an illegitimate daughter of King Henry VIII by Joan Dingley, and secured from this union the Manor of Kelston and four other manors in Somerset in southwestern England. These properties had been taken from Bath Priory and given to Ethelreda by her father. On Mary's accession he and his wife were imprisoned in the Tower with the Princess Elizabeth. John the elder was fined £1,000 for conveying a letter to Elizabeth from one of her friends while they were in prison. Ethelreda died ABT 1554, and after her death he married Isabella Markham, one of the ladies of the Princess Elizabeth, and he wooed his wife with love poems and recorded his attraction toward her "when first I thought her fair as she stood at the Princess' window in goodly attire, and talked with divers (persons) in the court yard". With Elizabeth on the throne and John's position secure, he began the building of one of the great manor houses of that day at Kelston Manor. The fact that John `the poet´ was the John, son of John Harrington and Elizabeth Mutton, is proved by the statement in National Biography, Vol. 24, pg. 285 where is to be found several pages devoted to the life and accomplishments of John the poet. It is stated that John, who died at Worms in 1613 (son of James, first Lord of Harrington) was a cousin of John Harrington `the writer´ (son of John `the poet´). This gives them a common grandfather in the John who married Elizabeth Mutton and shows their youngest son to have been John the poet. John the poet devoted his time and services to Princess (later Queen) Elizabeth the first. He was Treasurer to the King's Camps and buildings. He was called a 'cultivated man and poet'.

Notes: Was John or James who went to America in "Prosperous"? Was his wife Joan Jentilman or Anne Clinton? There is supporting evidence for both suppositions. Is possible that Joan Jentilman married both Robert and John Harrington, creating a confusion. American Genealogist V.20, 1944 p.46-47 :"Family of Earl of Lincoln, the alledged Connection" states that "Ann Clinton died Young and is incorrectly stated to have married John Harrington". It also states that the family of the Earl of Lincoln left no known descendants here. "Robert Harrington of Watertown, MA." by Frederick Lewis Weis states that "There was a Robert Harrington Bap 1 Oct 1616, son of Robert who had married on 7 Mar 1613, Joan Jentilman (bap. 5 Jul 1603), daughter of William and Agnes Jentilman. Joan (Jentilman) Harrington m.2nd, 25 Jul 1622 to Rev. John Younges" This last marriages is also referred to in Torrey (p.846). Other says that John Harington, son of Sir John Harington and Mary Rogers, was born about 1584. He married Anne Clinton, daughter of the Earl of Lincoln, an influential Puritan who was very active in aiding that Sect in settling Boston after 1628. Anne was born in Newcastle, England, in 1596, one of a family of seventeen children. John and Anne came to Boston in 1630. He was drowned in the harbor soon after their arrival, leaving Anne a widow with four children, all of whom were born in England.
