Died: Saturday 3 May 1523/4, George Inn, Lombard St, London

Buried: Whiteriars, Fleet Street, London

Notes: Knight of the Garter. The Complete Peerage vol.VII,pp.168-169. 6° Baron de Ruthyn. Sat on a commission of gaol delivery in 1502 and was given license to enter his lands in 1504. Present at the Field of the Cloth of Gold. A wastrel and probably a gambler, within a few years he had granted away a huge proportion of his estates to try and cover his debts, mainly to a flock of Henry VII’s rapacious courtiers who descended on him like vultures, preying on his weakness. Henry VII himself, while he did benefit financially, seems to have attempted to protect the foolish earl from himself and some of the consequences of his actions. Died in poverty, had dissipated his inheritance by the time he died in 1524.

Anne GREY (B. Hussey of Sleaford)

Born: ABT 1490, Kentshire, England

Died: AFT 1537

Buried: BEF 11 Feb 1545/1546

Notes: by 1509, she was the second wife of John, Baron Hussey of Sleaford. Lady Hussey supported Catalina of Aragon in the matter of King Henry’s divorce and was implicated in the matter of Elizabeth Barton, the Nun of Kent, in 1533. She refused to take the oath to support royal supremacy. In 1536 she was sent to the Tower for calling the 'illegitimized' Mary as 'princess' when she visited her on 5 Jun. Sent to the Tower of London, she was reported to be "very sick" at the beginning of Jul. On 3 Aug she was examined by Sir Edmund Walsingham and Sir William Petre, and claimed that she had erred "by inadvertence" when she called for "drink for the Princess" and later told someone that "the Princess" had gone walking. She was released and was back at Sleaford by Oct. When the rebellion known as the Pilgrimage of Grace began, Lord Hussey fled, leaving Lady Hussey behind. When some 500 rebels descended upon Sleaford on 7 Oct and threatened to burn it down, she promised she would bring her husband back to join them. Hussey, when questioned about this later, said she'd been a fool to make such a promise. In spite of his best efforts the authorities did not believe him innocent of involvement in the uprising. It didn't help that Lady Hussey, in his absence, had also provided the rebels with meat, drink, and money. He was sent to the Tower after the uprising failed. While he awaited trial, she set up housekeeping at Limehouse and was allowed to visit him. On one such visit, he repeated details of an examination of Lord Darcy that he had been permitted to sit in on. Lady Hussey passed this information on to her servant, Catherine Cresswell, who told her husband, Percival Cresswell, who repeated some of Darcy's responses to others, prompting a new investigation by the authorities into who had leaked sensitive information. There is no record, however, of Lady Hussey being questioned, let alone arrested. After Hussey was attainted and executed, his lands and goods were seized and his title forfeit, leaving the family in poverty. The aristocratic widows of traitors were usually provided with a pension.

Acceded: 1573

Died: 31 Jan 1614

Buried: 1 Feb 1614, Flitton, Bedfordshire

Notes: The Complete Peerage vol.VII,p.172. The 6th Earl succeeded to the title on the death of his brother Reynold, the 5th Earl, in 1573. He also held the title of Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire and 9th Baron Grey of Ruthyn. He was primarily responsible for restoring the fortunes of the Grey family after an earlier Earl had lost most of the estates through extravagant living and gambling.

Born in 1541, he was knighted in 1570 and became a member of the Queen’s Household. He was one of the commissioners who passed the death sentence on Mary Queen of Scots in 1587. Indeed, along with the Earl of Shrewsbury he was tasked with visiting Mary to break the news of her sentence. Along with the residence at Wrest he owned properties in Blunham in Bedfordshire, Kew and a house in the Barbican in London.

Henry’s will stated that the monument was to celebrate both this achievement and to act as a reminder to his descendants about the consequences of excessive living. The 6th Earl was married to Mary Cotton (d. 1580) who was the daughter of Sir George Cotton of Combermere in Cheshire and widow of Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby but they had no children.
