William COURTENAY (Archbishop of Canterbury)

Born: 1342, Exeter, Devon, England

Died: 31 Jul 1396, Maidstone, Kent, England

Notes: Bishop of Hereford; Bishop of London; Archbishop of Canterbury. He was born in Exeter about 1342, and studied law at Stapledon Hall, Oxford. He was elected Chancellor of the University, and held Prebends at Exeter, Wells, and York. At the age of twenty-eight he was consecrated Bishop of Hereford, and six years later became Bishop of London. He took part with William of Wykeham in defending the rights of the clergy: on the one hand, against the attacks made upon them by John of Gaunt, and on the other, against the exactions of the Pope. In 1381 he was translated to Canterbury, and exerted himself for the suppression of Lollardism. Wyclif's opinions were formally condemned at a Council held in his presence at Blackfriars in 1382. Courtenay died in 1396 at Maidstone, and is thought by some to have been buried there, but there is more reason to believe that his body was transferred to Canterbury where his eggigial monument can still be seen today.

Notes: On the occasion of her marriage to Andrew Luttrell, in the summer of 1359, Edward III gave them an annuity of 200£ for their lives, in aid of the maintenance of their social position. In 1361, Sir Andrew Luttrell and his wife went on pilgrimage to the famous shrine of Santiago de Compostella, with a retinue. of twenty-four men and women and as many horses. The lady was for some time in the service of her cousins, Edward 'the Black Prince' and the 'Fair Maid of Kent,' his wife. The annuity of 200£ was confirmed by Richard II in 1378, and renewed in favour of Lady Luttrell in 1381, her husband having died in the interval. In the meanwhile, Lady Luttrell had, with part of her savings bought the reversion of the manors of Feltwell in Norfolk, and Moulton, Debenham and Waldingfield in Suffolk. A charter of free warren therein was issued in her favour 1373. She also acquired the right of appointing two of the canons of the priory of Flitcham. The most important pecuniary transaction of this Lady Luttrell was, however, her purchase of the reversion of the castle of Dunster, the manors of Kilton, Minehead and Carhampton and the hundred of Carhampton, of five thousand marks. As she predeceased the vendor, she never obtained actual possession of this valuable property. Dying at Bermondsey on the 7th of August 1395, she was buried; by her own desire, in the Benedictine Church of St. Nicholas at Exeter. Edmund Stafford, Bishop of Exeter, in August of that year, ordered public prayers to be offered throughout his diocese for the souls of Margaret Cobham and Elizabeth Luttrell, sisters of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and, by way of encouragement, promised an indulgence of forty days to the faithful who should pray for them.

Edward COURTENAY (9° E. Devon)

Died: BEF 27 May 1509

Notes: Knight of the Garter. MP. A loyalist of the House of Tudor, he fought alongside Henry VII at Bosworth and had been one of his original companions in France. There he went to pay homage to the future King of the Lancastrian affinity to which he adhered. Edward was particularly opposed to Richard III, and as such sought the patronage of Margaret Beaufort and her secret alliance with the Dowager Queen Elizabeth Woodville on the murder of the princes. Courtenay acted a courier over the Channel in the dark days of 1480's. He also met the Marquess of Dorset, the alienated Yorkist, whose disaffected support left Richard dangerously exposed on the flank of his kingdom. He defended Exeter against Perkin Warbeck in 1497. The earldom was forfeited at his death by his son’s attainder for conspiracy with De La Pole, formerly Earls of Suffolk, whose continental dabblings with Cardinal Pole presented a dynastic threat to the Tudor inheritance, as the last of the Yorkists. The earldom was restored in 1512 to his son, William Courtenay, 1st Earl of Devon through the marriage of the daughter, Elizabeth of Sir Phillip Courtenay of Powderham Castle. The extinction of the ancient medieval line continued in the cadet line of the cousinage to this day. Edward died in May 1509, and it might be only hours after his will was made on 27 May 1509. It was proved at Lambeth on 15 Jul 1509.

Margaret COURTENAY

Born: ABT 1499

Died: AFT 2 Jul 1520/ 15 Apr 1526

Notes: Margaret was the daughter of William Courtenay, Earl of Devon, and the Princess Catherine, and tradition says she died at Holcombe, choked by a fishbone, A.D. 1512. Says on her tombe. But Margaret Courtenay is mentioned in the will of her grandfather, which was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on the eleventh of Jul 1509, and this lady is also mentioned by her mother in a document dated 1511, and signed "Kath. Devonshire", in which she states that Margaret, her daughter, is now above thirteen years of age, and that she proposes "to procure for her a fitting marriage". This was found for her, in the person of Henry, Lord Herbert, eldest son of Charles Somerset, Earl of Worcester; and she was living at Richmond, in attendance on the infant Princess Mary, on the second of Jul, 1520. She died before her husband, who married, secondly, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Anthony Browne. So we can only conclude that the inscription at Colyton is a mendacious inscription, and was invented to support the tradition about "little chokebone", as the natives call her, and which, like many other traditions about the Courtenays, can have had no foundation in fact.
