HOWARD of Norfolk

Notes: charged in 1378 with the abduction of Margery Narford, grand daughter and heir to Alice, Lady Neville. Such was the serious nature of the offence that Howard was not only sent to the Tower but also bound under substantial recognizances to do no harm to Lady Neville and his captor, Sis John Le Strange; furthermore, his case was brought to the attention of Parliament. But such animosity as possibly remained between Strange and Howard did not, in the following year, prevent Richard, earl of Arundel, from having both men act as witnesses to one of his transactions.

Notes: Lord Edmund Howard is said to have been ‘a wastrel who squandered his wife's inheritance and then had to flee abroad to avoid his creditors’. When his first wife died, their young children were likely brought up in the household of Agnes Tilney, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk. He sought help from Thomas Cromwell, who arranged his appointment as comptroller of Calais in 1530, but died ‘engulfed in debts’ in 1539. His widow, Margaret Mundy, married thirdly, before 1542, Henry Mannox (d. 1564), of Hemingford Grey, Cambridgeshire, who may have been the Henry Mannox involved in sexual indiscretions circa 1536 with Catherine Howard. By Henry Mannox she had two daughters: Anne (b. 1542), who married John Chapman; and Margaret (b. 1549), who married Francis Williams alias Cromwell.

Notes: her son Thomas was born about 1524. Her husband died in 1528 and Thomas became a ward of his grandfather the 3rd Duke of Norfolk (Letters and Papers H. VIII, iv.6248 (21)) He appeared at the Exchequer in 1551 to present proof that his ancestors had held a court leet at Hintlesham since the time of Edward I. Coming to Framlingham in Jul 1553, he took the oath of allegiance to Queen Mary there on 14 Jul and became one of the two Members of Parliament for Bramber, Sussex in her first parliament. This was achieved through the influence of the Duke of Norfolk. He was later granted an annuity of £20 from the Crown.

By 1557, he had married Audrey, daughter of Sir Nicholas Hare of Bruisyard, Suffolk, who was Master of the Rolls (b. 1553 - d. 1557). Thomas sat again in Parliament as M.P. for Great Yarmouth, 1563-1567, and was a Commissioner for the subsidy voted to Queen Elizabeth during this Parliament. In 1569 he was Controller of the Household of Thomas, 4th Duke of Norfolk and later receiver in Suffolk, for the Duke, by 1572 and for Phillip, 13th Earl of Arundel by 1589.

Having rebuilt Hintlesham Hall, which was probably completed about 1579, he also bought, after his son's marriage, estates of freehold and copyhold land in Flowton, Burstall and elsewhere.

Thomas died at Hintlesham on 13 Jan 1594 and there is an elaborate monument to him, his wife and 9 children, as well as to his son Nicholas and his family in Hintlesham Church.He was succeeded by his son, Nicholas Timperley (b. 1564 - d. 1624) who married Anne Markham.

The girls were educated by John Foxe, who taught them Greek and Latin and had them compose poetry. It may be that Margaret Howard, unlike her older sisters, was permanently converted from the Catholicism of her father and grandfather to the Protestantism of her aunt. After Queen Mary succeeded to the throne in 1553, Margaret was briefly in the household of her grandfather, Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk. Margaret married Henry Scrope, 9th baron Scrope of Bolton after his first wife died in Nov 1558. They had two sons, Thomas, 10th baron Scrope, and Henry. When Mary Stuart first fled from Scotland into England her earliest prison was Carlisle Castle, where she was in the keeping of Lady Scrope. She was there by 18 May 1568 and was moved to Bolton Castle in Yorkshire by mid-Jul. On 3 Feb 1569, the Queen of Scots arrived at Tutbury Castle, where she was turned over to the keeping of the Earl of Shrewsbury.
