The daughter of George Acworth of Luton, Bedfordshire (d. May 17, 1530) and Margaret Wilberforce (d.1539), Joan married William Bulmer (1512-1555/6) at an early age, then left his house to go into service with the dowager duchess of Norfolk (Agnes Tylney). In that household she was involved in a love affair with Edward Waldegrave (1514-August 13, 1584) at the same time Catherine Howard was involved with music master Francis Dereham. When Catherine married King Henry VIII, Joan was at court as a chamberer and was called upon to testify against the queen when the truth about her early life came out in 1541. Both Joan and Edward Waldegrave were arrested and held for several months. At the time of Catherine Howard’s trial and execution in 1542, Joan Bulmer was listed as a widow, but in fact her husband was still alive. She could not marry Waldegrave until June 1556. Her children with Waldegrave were Anne (b.c.1544), Mary, Bridget, Edward, and Margaret.

Thomas Wyatt (William’s eldest son) who died soon after his father, married about 1516 Margaret a daughter of Sir Thomas Haute and the widow of William Isaac of Kent. She was an aunt of the  Jane Haute who married Sir Thomas Wyatt the Younger of Kent.

Thomas inherited his father’s properties at Bradwell, Tillingham and Sutton.

William Wyatt’s third son William married Jane Herne of Surrey. Their son Edward married Cecile Dingley of Charlton (Worcestershire) and had several sons who, doubtless, left issue.

Ann Wyatt, William’s daughter, married John Savile of Lupset in Yorkshire, the Keeper of Sandal Castle. This John Savile, or his son John, became Esquire to Ann’s cousin Sir Thomas Wyatt of Kent. In the Church at Aylesford, Kent, is a Brass dated 1545 to the memory of John Savill gentleman “one time Servant to Sir Thomas Wyatt.”

Of Thomas’s sons Francis, the eldest was “of Bobbingworth in Essex.” He married Frances Ellis and had a son named Isaac who was obviously named after William Isaac of Kent. Isaac married three times and had two sons and three daughters who, in their turn, had issue.

Thomas Wyatt’s third son Edward was “of Tillingham Hall” near Bradwell and married Mary a daughter of Sir William Waldegrave whose brother Edward Waldegrave married Elizabeth Cheney of Devon.

Edward Wyatt died in 1571, leaving one son, also named Edward, who married Jane a daughter of Wilton (or Weston) Browne of Essex, by whom he left issue, a son. In Tillingham Church is a fine effigy of this later Edward Wyatt dated 1584. The figure is represented kneeling upon a cushion before an open book, his hands clasped in prayer and his sword by his side. Above the figure is a Shield with the Arms of Wyatt, “Gules on a fesse Or between three boars’ heads couped Argent as many lions rampant Sable,” quartered with the Arms of Bayliffe alias Clarke and those of Browne.

In this sketch, no attempt has been made to prolong beyond Isaac and Edward the pedigree of the Essex Wyats, who left many descendants, some of whom may be alive today.
