Knighted in Ireland, in 1599, by Robert Earl of Essex, lord lieutenant, for his valiant behaviour against the rebels, . Returning to England he took part, like his brothers, Roger and Francis, in Essex’s rebellion in Feb 1600-1. Became in 1632 the seventh Earl; and was honoured with a visit at Belvoir from King Charles in Jul 1634. He married Frances, second daughter of Sir Edward Carey of Aldenham, in the county of Hertford, knight, sister to Henry, Viscount Falkland of the kingdom of Scotland, lord deputy of Ireland, and relict of Ralphe Bashe of Stanstead, in the county of Herts, esq.

Earl George died at his house in the Savoy, Mar 29, 1641, without issue.
