Edward HERBERT (Sir)

Notes: of Powis Castle, Welshpool; ancestor of Marquess of Powis, which family stayed Catholic during Penal Times, involved in Jacobite resistance, extinct. A woman called Dorothy Fountain had been identified as nurse first to Margaret Neville, daughter of Lord Latimer and the Queen Catherine Parr stepdaughter, and later as nurse to Edward Herbert, Anne Parr’s son, when he lived at Chelsea Manor in 1547. Edward Herbert bought the Castle and the surrounding estates from Edward Grey, the illegitimate son of Edward Grey, the 4th and last Baron Grey of Powis in 1587.

Notes: Lord High Steward to Elizabeth I. M.P. for Monmouthshire 1597-8, 1604-11, 1614, 1621-22 and 1624-29. Member of the Council for Wales 1608 and 1633; Sheriff of Montgomeryshire 1613; Constable and Steward of Radnor Castle 1631. He was a Royalist in the Civil War and held Powis Castle for the King until it fell to Parliament in 1644. Candidate for "Mr WH", the dedicatee of Shakespeare's sonnets
